PLA ( Poly Lactic Acid )

PLA is a biobased and biodegradable thermoplastic , not made from traditional fossil fuels but based on lactic acid, produced by fermentation of sugar or biomass like corn starch. It degrades in natural environments leaving behind biomass, CO2 and water. PLA meets the widely recognized European compostability standard EN13432.

PLA is not only made from renewable feedstocks, but it also uses less non-renewable energy in production than oil based plastics.

A Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) for a typical fossil oil based plastic reveals CO2 emissions many times higher than those for PLA.

There are several end-of-life options available on the market like mechanical recycling, chemical recycling or composting.
